Media Release -- The newly expanded DC Collectibles online store, featuring high-end collectible products and toys based on characters from DC Comics, Vertigo and MAD, is now live and open for business: www.shopdcentertainment.com. Following last month's re-branding announcement the launch of an expanded online store is the second phase of DC Direct's transformation into DC Collectibles. The newly expanded store now offers the entire DC Collectibles product line as well as new "online exclusives."
The first two online exclusives are available for purchase during the month of May. The first is a Flashpoint Action Figure Box Set including: Batman, Wonder Woman, The Flash and a previously unreleased Emperor Aquaman. The set also include a $500 Wayne Casino Poker Chip. The second exclusive is a Heroes of the DC Universe: Blackest Night Green Lantern and Sinestro Bust.

Media Release -- Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps embark on their latest intergalactic missions as Warner Home Video (WHV) releases Green Lantern: The Animated Series — Rise of the Red Lanterns (Season 1 Part 1) on DVD. Based on the adventures of the popular DC Comics super hero, Green Lantern: The Animated Series, currently part of Cartoon Network's DC Nation programming block (Saturdays at 10 a.m. ET/PT), is produced by Warner Bros. Animation and animation legend Bruce Timm (Batman: The Animated Series; DC Universe Animated Original Movies). The two-disc DVD set featuring the first 13 episodes of the CG-animated action series will be available on August 28, 2012 for $19.97 SRP.
Green Lantern: The Animated Series — Rise of the Red Lanterns (Season 1 Part 1) follows Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps on a treacherous journey through deep space. As Earth's Green Lantern, Hal must face down an invasion from the villainous Red Lantern Corps, who will stop at nothing to destroy and silence the Green Lantern Corps forever. Joined by his former drill sergeant Kilowog, and several all-new heroes, Hal brings the cosmic battle against the forces of evil to the far reaches of the galaxy. Equipped with a new squad and new spacecraft, The Inceptor, Hal and the team set out to protect the universe — and the Green Lantern Corps itself!

Media Release -- With the "Night of the Owls" storyline heating up across the BATMAN titles, BATMAN #4 has sold out again and is going back to press for a new, fourth printing.
BATMAN #4 Fourth Printing (APR128092) reprints the story by writer Scott Snyder and artist Greg Capullo. Featuring a recolored version of the issue's original cover, this new printing is scheduled to arrive in stores on June 13 and is on FOC on May 21.
This issue is currently out of stock at Diamond, but still may be available at comics shops.

Media Release -- Geoff Johns, Chief Creative Officer of DC Entertainment, and Jim Lee, Co-Publisher of DC Entertainment, will head the list of top talent who will be attending New York Comic Con (NYCC) on behalf of renowned comic book publisher DC Entertainment. Mr. Johns and Mr. Lee will be Spotlight guests at the annual pop culture extravaganza, where they will be joined by other leading DCE guests who will be announced in the near future. This is the first guest announcement for the 2012 edition of NYCC. Show organizers note that while more major guest announcements will follow in the weeks and months ahead, they are pleased that this first announcement is focused on two of the comic industry's leading talents. Once again, DC Entertainment will occupy a centrally located booth on the NYCC show floor where fans will have an opportunity to mix and mingle with writers, artists and staff.
Johns and Lee have been busy recently setting the stage and the tone for DC Comics' THE NEW 52, the biggest line-wide relaunch in the history of the comic book medium. Justice League #1 has had 8 printings since it was published in August '11 and was Diamond Comic Distributors' top-selling comic book of 2011. Mr. Johns and Mr. Lee will be in New York City Friday, May 11, 2012 to sign copies of the new hardcover release JUSTICE LEAGUE VOL. 1: ORIGIN, a story about how the World's Greatest Super Heroes interact when meeting for the very first time. The signing will take place at Midtown Comics (downtown location), 64 Fulton Street, 6:00pm – 8:00pm. Midtown Comics is a partner with New York Comic Con and will have NYCC tickets on sale soon and will be the exclusive retailer for NYCC 4-Day tickets.
This year's New York Comic Con will take place October 11 – 14, 2012 at the Javits Center in New York City. The pop culture event, which attracted over 100,000 fans last year, features top talent and major artists from all areas of the pop culture universe including comics, film, television, music, books, and gaming.
"I can't think of a better way to start revealing our guests for 2012 than by announcing Geoff Johns and Jim Lee," notes Lance Fensterman, Group Vice President for ReedPOP and Show Manager for NYCC. Snyder, Capullo & Glapion
For the most part, the books I enjoy the most are the non-super hero variety. The Walking Deads, Chews and American Vampires of the world. I do still read some cape books for an array of reasons but much of it falls into the "ordinary" category. Every once in a while I am reminded of why I still pick them up. I am reminded of what I hope to see in a hero book. Though it may be something I have seen 100 times (even with the same character), it still gets me every single time. This book contains one of those elements. Snyder puts Batman in an unwinnable situation and has him call on something deep down inside to pull out an impossible reversal of the tide. Partnered with that is Capullo, who provides a visual of that transformation that I won't soon forget. I got goose bumps reading this issue.
Night of the Owls officially begins, but Batman is already pushed to the brink as this issue starts. He is in an armored suit fighting off dozens of "talons" in his own Batcave while Alfred clings to danger room controls hoping to help his master. Batman then recalls how previous Wayne generations had dealt with bats in the cave. They introduced a bat's natural predator, the owl. Snyder narrates a tremendous tale that completely solidifies everything about Batman that works – he is always prepared and his personal tragedies drive him to always win.
The book launches into the massive crossover at the end as various other Bat-related characters spring into action. This book truly serves as the feeder into so many other titles. The backup provides some background into the owls, but through the eyes of Alfred's father, which is certainly an interesting take on the story. I can't wait to see how Synder folds this backup story into the main one.
Capullo has become the Batman artist of modern times. Sure you might like Jim Lee or countless others for various reasons, but when I hear the word Batman I picture Capullo's pencils and particularly the scenes in this book where Batman picks himself up off the ground for another round. Capullo's work on Spawn was amazing. It doesn't come close to what he is doing in this title. Capullo has evolved into something more with his work in this title.
Batman is DC's best title. I can say that confidently and absolutely. It stands out much like Green Lantern did for so many of the previous five or six years. Snyder is creating an enormous storyline with a character that seems to have had everything already done. This book is one not to miss. Don't be scared away by the crossover. If you get one book this week get this one.

Krul, Gray, Palmiotti, Olivetti & Panosian
GI Combat is a book that combines two comics into one: The Land That Time Forgot and the Unknown Soldier. Neither are new concepts to the DC universe, but this reinvention of them isn't something that has been done in the past few years so it has some level of freshness to them. For the most part, the stories couldn't be more different other than the fact that they deal with the military. I liked one of the stories a lot, but felt both stories lacked that certain "wow" factor that would make me immediately add the book to my pull list. At this point, I think if either concept appeals to you or if soldiers in general are your genre then this is a good book to sample.
The first story, The Land That Time Forgot, by Krul and Olivetti, is very straight forward. We get introduced to a couple of characters through a video call home. We get little glimpses into their personalities, but nothing to make them stand out too much. Then, the characters are ordered into Korea, where they find a black hole of sorts. You can guess the rest, but here's a hint: dinosaurs. The story moves very quickly which is a plus but does it make sense that the Land That Time Forgot is the actual cliffhanger? I'm not sure there was enough to get us there naturally.
The Unknown Soldier, by Gray, Palmiotti and Panosian, is a concept that has seen more action recently. This incarnation doesn't appear to be connected to the previous launches of the character but I can't be 100% certain. This story is much more dense. We get a full fourteen page read with a lot of exposition and a lot of character development. We may not "know" who the Unknown Soldier is, but we certainly get a good chunk of the origin story. This book felt like a much more satisfying read and the ending promises to throw the character into some interesting situations down the road. This was a good read.
The art teams couldn't have more different tasks at hand if they tried. Olivetti gets elements of fantasy and big splash pages with lots of crazy images. Panosian gets grim and violent images. Olivetti has a painted style whereas Panosian goes full-on realistic with a ton of details. Both stories are enhanced by the artwork.
As a package, this book has two, fourteen page stories for $4. It's a good value for the stories within. I'm not sure this book was going to ever be in everyone's wheelhouse, but I do think a lot of people will be pleasantly surprised at what they find. You get an all-out, action, science fiction, army story on one side and you get a tragic, revenge-driven, complex character, army story on the other. Pick it up and give it a shot.
