More Fishie Artwork – Heraldry Shields and Flags
October 30, 2011 in Art, Fans by Fishie
Hey there, everyone! First post by Fishie on the new RR! And what better way to celebrate it than with some fresh artwork of mine, hmm?
So, funny story about this batch – it was actually originally two series of images that had nothing to do with each other. The first series takes the concept of the Coat of Arms, those symbolic shields that represent a family’s lineage, and applies it to various Batman characters. For each shield, I put symbols associated with the characters in question (with the exception of Two-Face’s because seriously how do you depict both sides of a two-sided coin at once?), used colors associated with those characters, and gave each character a letter from the Greek alphabet corresponding to some trait or characteristic they have. For example, if I had done Poison Ivy’s coat of arms, I might have used the Greek letter Pi or Phi for “Plantlife/Poison”, and Phi in mathematics is also the symbol for the Golden Ratio, which plants such as ferns grow in accordance to; Pi, aside from being equal to 3.1459…, is also the measure of osmotic potential (of water in this case, which plants need) in chemistry. Yes, I am insanely geeky for doing it this way, did you expect any less from me?
The second series of images has to do with images on flags. When I was in high school I was in Marching Band, and the images on the color guard’s flags stuck with me for this series. I drew inspiration from the varied colors and simple yet creative designs the flags had, though in the Joker’s case I instead took inspiration from the wall-hangings commonly associated with a King or Queen’s throne room. Fairly fitting that the Joker’s flag is the odd one out, isn’t it?
I started with one batch (Riddler, Joker, Scarecrow) in a tryptich, and liked how it looked, so I did a second tryptich with the three main female Bat-rogues (Harley, Poison Ivy, Catwoman), then a ditich with the good guys (only Batman and Robin; no Nightwing, Huntress, or Batgirl unfortunately, but if everyone really wants drawings of them, I’ll do it – just specify which Batgirl if you want me to draw her [Suck it, DCnU]!).
The Coats of Arms and flags are all below in a single gallery. Oh, and there’s an extra little surprise for everyone in the middle there… Happy Halloween, everyone!
Awesome! I love these! Enjoyed reading about the meanings and significance of the different symbols incorporated.
Thanks Chaotica.
Thought that might interest someone or another.
lotta work, but worth it I bet. These are all very nice. Loved that Joker and the Two face one. They’re my favs. GREAT WORK! Thanks for sharing
Really, you like Two-Face’s heraldry shield? Because honestly I don’t think that one was my best work. I do love J’s though.
